What do you think of when you hear the words “living room”? For me, I picture our family gathered together playing on the floor with my son’s cars or dinosaurs. I picture pizza and movie night eating on the floor in front of the TV. I picture quiet mornings sipping coffee and holding hands with my husband. I picture no couch space and balloons scattered across the floor as family gathers together to celebrate a birthday. I picture laughing at my husband’s corny joke as we enjoy an at home date night. For me, the living room is the central hub of the house. That is where we spend probably 75% of our day. So it has been my desire for quite a while now to redecorate our living room. Remember how I posted about my living room inspiration a few weeks ago? (See that here). Well, today I’m finally going to reveal what I did! So, without any further ado…
*I was provided the rug from Lorena Canals in exchange for an honest review, as always, all opinions are 100% my own.
The couch was probably one of my favorite additions. It’s not perfect or brand new (we bought it from one of my husband’s friends), but it is perfect for us. My fear with purchasing a brand new couch at this stage in life (aka having a toddler 😉 ) was that I would be too concerned with it getting dirty instead of just enjoying it. It is the perfect size for having friends or family over.
Their rugs are all handmade with natural dyes and are MACHINE-WASHABLE! They fit into a standard washer and dryer so when your little one spills their drink, gets paint from their craft on it, or tracks mud in on their shoes, you can just gather it up, throw it in the wash, and it’s as good as new!
This was a huge deal for me! I wanted to have a gorgeous rug to “complete” the living room, but I didn’t want to be constantly worrying about my son getting it dirty.
They have so many different designs for the home. I went with the Bereber Beige rug (the Diamonds rug was my second choice for the living room!) They also have great rugs for your kid’s rooms too (I mean, how adorable is this Bear rug?!!) They also sell machine washable cushions that would be perfect for a little one’s room (this car cushion is so cute!)
Having a machine washable rug really has pulled the room together and helped me relax and enjoy my family when otherwise, I know that I would be “on edge” keeping an eye on anything that might get the rug dirty.
Part of making the living room toddler friendly was including a coffee table that was safe for him to be around and a place to store his toys. I love the ottoman that we found for our living room! It makes the perfect footrest or place for my son to play with his trucks, and it flips over to a harder surface which is perfect for resting coffee cups in the morning. I am not worried about my son breaking it or running into a sharp corner and it really helps me rest at ease.
The area where we store his toys was debated on for a long time. We wanted to get something else to store his toys in, but we had just moved this changing table out of his room a few weeks before and since we like to try to reuse furniture before going out and buying something new, we thought we would try it here. I actually really like it! It fits pretty much all of his toys (other than that, he has one other toy bin, a stuffed animal bin, and some books in his room) and is tall enough that I can put things I don’t want him to reach on top of it. Right now we have a little basket full of diapers, our little money tree, and a second basket to help contain any extra items that might be lying around. In the drawer, I store some of his preschool and craft items so they are easy to get to.
I love that all the toys are easy for my son to get to so he doesn’t have to ask me to help him grab a new toy 300 times all before 8am 😉 and so that he can learn how to put them all away on his own at the end of the day.
And since we love repurposing furniture, we are using our dresser as the entertainment stand because the one we had before had cabinets instead of drawers so our son was easily able to open those, and it was too low, so he was able to grab at anything up on top. The drawers on the dresser are perfect for hiding any of the not so cute living room entertainment items and our toddler is not able to open them!
The finishing touches of this room are another of my favorites! I sewed the navy and gray pillow covers to cover our older pillows we had before. The gray throw was originally in our room, and the striped one was a great deal I found in the At Home store.
And of course, there is the gallery wall! I love family photos (I am a photographer so that kind of comes with the job 😉 ). I love being able to look at someone’s walls and see their “story”. It adds a personal touch to the room (and some extra greenery in our case!)
I’d love to know what your favorite part of your living room is? Let me know in the comments!
