Hey you guys! I took a week off of the blog because we actually just moved the weekend before this last one so we have been busy unpacking and everything that comes with moving to a new home. It wasn’t anything major; same city and all, but it is much nicer and fits our family’s needs for right now.
Anyway, all that to say, I totally missed the fact that last week was my one year blog anniversary (or blogiversary if you will 😉 )! I published my very first blog post on February 5, 2016. (What!? You can check it out here!) I can’t believe it has already been a whole year of blogging! I have been so blessed to have “met” some amazing women and mamas though my blog and Instagram. I have loved getting to know these women through their blogs and social media accounts and I love that they are all so friendly and helpful (I know I have probably bothered many of them a few times more than necessary with my 800 questions when it came to blogging. But they were all more than willing to help answer my questions!)
I won’t lie to you though; sometimes blogging has stressed me out! I know that I love to write and I love being able to express myself creatively though my blog, but sometimes I get so caught up in the numbers and views that I end up spending more time working on my blog and not enjoying the sweet fleeting moments of early motherhood. So if you happen to notice that it has been a while since I’ve posted here or on my social media accounts it is probably because I can’t (or don’t want to) step away from my adorable toddler and his train set; or I am sitting on the floor with a pile of books next to me and my son is running to grab “just one more…”
I never wanted my blog to distract me from what is most important in life (and it hasn’t for the most part), but there are times that I just have to step away from everything and just sit and enjoy being present with my son. They really do grow up so fast you guys! And all I ever wanted was to be able to stay home with my children and I am so blessed that I can do that!
Ok, so now that I am done rambling, I wanted to share a few things (as a mom blogger) that I have learned over the past year that might be good for you if you want to start a blog.
Write down your “why”
Before you begin writing anything, sit down and think about why you want to start a blog and then write it down on a paper and keep it where you can see it. Look at it any time you are feeling uninspired or discouraged with your blog. I look at my “why” every time I sit down to write, and it reminds me of why I began blogging and what I want to accomplish with my blog.
Find a time that works for you
Sit down with your planner and figure out a time that works best for you to spend on your blog. Before I did this, I was trying to sit down and write and work on my blog while my son was playing at my feet. I soon realized this was not going to work for me because first, I was not actually present with him while he was playing (one of the main reasons I desired to be a stay at home mom) and second, I really was not fully focused on what I was working on because I was keeping an eye on my son or trying to keep his hands off of the keys (he’s obsessed with keyboards, anyone else’s kids like that too?)
I actually will get up two hours before my son wakes up so that I have time to fit in a quick workout, do my bible study, and have about an hour to work on my blog while getting in a cup or two of coffee before having to chase after a toddler who has a TON of energy in the mornings! So figure out what works best for you. Maybe it is during a 2 hour naptime (I only wish my son napped that long!), or at night after your children go to bed (I have tried this but after he goes to bed it’s like I am so drained of energy, all I can do is sit and relax, but that is also when my husband and I spend time together also, so maybe that is why I never felt like I could work on blogging in the evenings.) Find what works for you when you are not trying to juggle watching a toddler AND writing.
Take breaks if you need to
I know that for a while, I felt like I couldn’t take a break from blogging because it would make my views go down (which yes, it can) but if you are just rushing to write something just to get anything posted, then it will not be very good. There will probably be times that you need to just stop and take a break. I find that it actually helps my creativity and the break gets me more excited to get back to writing. So if you are feeling discouraged or not sure if you want to keep doing what you are doing, maybe take a break for a while. Pick up a book, take your little one to the park, do something that you love with the ones that you love just to clear your mind. You can come back to it refreshed and excited to continue.
Now don’t worry, I am not going to start blogging about blogging over here. 😉 I just wanted to share a few tips that took me a while to figure out my first year of blogging.
